SONIC FABRIC, the invention of sound and conceptual artist\u00a0Alyce Santoro<\/a>,
\nis a beautiful, audible, versatile textile woven from 50% polyester thread
\nand 50% audiocassette tape recorded with intricate collages of sound. The
\nsound compositions themselves are a kind of SONIC FABRIC too \u2013 strange and
\nintricate music made by weaving together unlikely combinations of looped
\nand layered samples of found, created, and collected sounds.<\/p>\n

\nAs the artist \u00a0says : I began by knitting with the tape, but the texture of the resulting fabric \u00a0was very loose and flimsy. Finally a weaver friend offered to try using the\u00a0tape on a loom at the\u00a0Rhode Island School of Design<\/a>. The product astounded both\u00a0of us. We never expected such a beautiful, tightly-woven, functional material.<\/p>\n

Nearly a decade has elapsed since then, and her \u00a0works made of SONIC FABRIC
\nhave been included in exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world
\nrelated to sound art, recycling and repurposing, technology, and fashion.
\nAs a conceptual artist and a musician, shw says, I am constantly collecting and
\nexperimenting with the sounds that are recorded onto the tape before it\u2019s woven
\ninto fabric.<\/p>\n

SONIC FABRIC is woven on a\u00a01940\u2019s dobby loom at a small family run textile
\nmill in New England<\/a>. The large spools of tape used in the weaving process are
\nsalvaged from the waning audiobook industry. All of the tape is recorded with
\nintricately composed collages of sound prior to weaving.<\/p>\n
