Designer and urban archeologist Guilhem de Castelbajac’s with his project OFF DUTY NO MORE has immortalized the iconic lights of Taxi Signs . The re-purposing of these lights as interior lamps lends a second life to a utilitarian design that is slowly being rendered obsolete and all too overlooked.
Each of the lamps have been sourced from retired cabs of New York, Paris and other cities. As the taxis of each city become updated, these signs are left for the junkyard.
Off Duty No More’s lamps repurpose these discarded vintage plastic fixtures, and retrofit them with energy efficient LED lights. Each lamp sits on a metal base which echoes the automobiles they were once perched on. Because each sign is different, each lamp is unique and numbered in limited editions.
‘off duty no more’ was on show at wanteddesign during NY design week 2012.
